title : Juxtaposition
Definition: Simply stated, juxtaposition means placing things side-by-side. In art this usually is done with the intention of bringing out a specific quality or creating an effect, particularly when two contrasting or opposing elements are used. The viewer's attention is drawn to the similarities or differences between the elements.

My own interpretation: Two objects that are different placing next to each other to show contrast and a obvious comparison can be seen at the same time.

By juxtaposing two diverse objects or words next to each other, human brain will automatically relate or transfer meaning. Usually ‘turning’ something familiar to something less familiar or vice-versa.

Application of juxtaposition can be seen in many forms such as literature, paintings, photography, music ,film and etc.

A poem that describe juxtaposition:

JUXTAPOSITION

They say,
between black and white there is gray in choices
perhaps brown or mulatto or mestizo in people

They say,
two wrongs can make a right
that atrocity must be answered with another

They say, when the ears hear them clearly,
that the soul is caught between two worlds
eye for eye, tooth for tooth

They say, when the edge is near,
yes! choose a side
so only one bomb will strike you

They say,
their words are the mind's thoughts
but then why do they ring so falsely?

why does the beating heart scream to the throbbing brain
no! do not choose
but die twice, before forgetting
that the line between black and white is not gray
but golden

If they say,
beware the calm that comes before the storm,
then I, I say that the silence in my heart is no calm,
but harmony.

Life vs Death

Harmless vs Deadly

Modern vs Traditional

Elderly vs Young

Still vs Moving

Western vs Eastern

Healthy vs Unhealthy

Strong vs Frail
The wither tree is so fragile, it can be broken easily. But the stone in the lake is so hard and strong.

Interesting juxtaposition from http://saraherogers.blogspot.com/

Beautiful vs Ugly

The ballerina present a beautiful performance on the stage, but no one know how much effort she has put in order to performance beautifully.
A flowing and effortless in appearance, but requiring so much strength and work.
The blisters formed on her feet is ugly, but the outcome after all her hard work is beautiful and pleasant.
This sort of remind me as an art students. The artwork created at the end is wonderful , but who knows how many sleepless night she or he has been through
just to finish the artwork.

Nature vs Man-made

This presentation by Revital Cohen, in which she talks about her Life Support Project, was also presented at the Design Indaba Expo.

About Revital Cohen:

Cohen recently attained a Masters in Design Interactions from the Royal College of Art in London, which followed a BA in Contemporary Furniture Design from Buckinghamshire New University. As a designer and researcher she develops critical objects and provocative scenarios exploring the JUXTAPOSITION of the natural with the artificial. Her work spans across various media and includes collaborations with scientists, animal breeders and medical consultants.

About the Life Support project:

“Assistance animals - from guide dogs to psychiatric service cats - unlike computerised machines, can establish a natural symbiosis with the patients who rely on them. Could animals be transformed into medical devices? This project proposes using animals bred commercially for consumption or entertainment as companions and providers of external organ replacement. The use of transgenic farm animals, or retired working dogs, as life support ‘devices’ for renal and respiratory patients offers an alternative to inhumane medical therapies. Could a transgenic animal function as a whole mechanism and not simply supply the parts? Could humans become parasites and live off another organism’s bodily functions?”
