title : Creative Studies Assignment 1-Defining Creativity

Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun. - quote by Mary Lou Cook.

I totally agree. All of these things she mentioned above are what we as a human have to go through from our childhood to adulthood. Creativity is one kind of special ability that exists in each of us. Therefore, everyone is creative in this world, is just the matter of how they make use of this special ability. I used to hear that only designers or artists are the creative people, but actually scientists, inventors, chefs, hairstylists, and even a normal housewife can be creative as well. WHY???This is because they have the ability to create something new, re-modify an existing item into other new objects, and provide solution to solve problems. These are some of the qualities of being creative. Perhaps, the extent of making use of this creativity in an average people is not as much compared to an extremely creative people, but we can’t deny the fact that they do have this special ability too. When a child is born with certain talent and outshine the rest, we label them as prodigy. People see them as a unique individual in this world, one of a kind. Some grow up and hold this certain gift with utmost gratitude and continue to enhance it; but there is also some that grow up to be arrogant and take it for granted, that time they will stop improving and soon their talent will lost. It is frustrated to see talented people think that they are creative enough and already reach the peak so they just stop their journey to explore more, experience more, and gaining more knowledge. As for others that are average, they wouldn’t get satisfy easily with the current state they are, they continue to learn and make discovery. Eventually their creativity will develop and evolve, because I believe creativity can be nurture.

During the lecture, the lecturer showed us the video about this marshmallow game created by Sir Ken Robinson. It is a real shock to learn that children build the tallest marshmallow among all those professionals. On second thought, it is kind of reasonable. Pablo Picasso once said “Every children is artist, the problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up”. Children have amazing qualities about them that make them so creative: CURIOUS, OPEN MIND, PLAYFUL, DARING, FUN and so on. They always ask questions because of curiosity, even though the question they asked might sounds like the dumbest question in the world. I don’t know who came up with this proverb, “curiosity kills a cat”, but I do know that this is definitely not going to work on children. They wouldn’t give in until they get the desirable answer. Besides, they don’t care how stupid they look, how many mistakes they have made, most of the time they just act without thinking, they do things by following their instincts.

Creativity comes from trust, trust our instincts, never hope more than you work.-----Rita Mae Brown.

Creativity is allowing you to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.----------Scott Adams, American Cartoonist.

Don’t think. Thinking is the enemy of creativity. It’s self-conscious, and anything self-conscious is lousy. You can’t try to do things. You simply must do things.---------Ray Bradbury.

As we grow older, more restrictions and self-imposed limitation imposed on us can really dry out our creative spirits. Adults are afraid to be wrong, make mistakes because we don’t want to look silly in front of others. To sum up, I think we should learn from the children, dream more about impossibilities, think wild, let ourselves loose and become a sponge that absorb everything.

DESCRIPTION

“Mindtrip” is an amusing, but truly demented three-minute animated short film by the Spanish filmmaker dmente. The film could be viewed as the filmmaker’s visual response to questions about the nature of inspiration and/or creativity. At any rate, “Mindtrip” is a darkly humorous, amazing, mind-tripping digital collage.

This piece includes a number of colorful illustrations, as well as the wickedly weird animated short film, “Mindtrip.”
